What are dark spots on your face and skin?

When your skin has blotchy, patchy, or uneven-colored spots, we refer to it as hyperpigmentation. The term “hyperpigmentation” refers to the presence of too much pigment. Your skin’s color is called “pigmentation”. Hyperpigmentation results when there is an overabundance of skin’s natural pigment, melanin, deposited in the skin. There are three kinds of hyperpigmentation, each caused by a distinct factor.

What causes this hyperpigmentation?

Based on the primary cause, there are three types of hyperpigmentation:

Sun-induced hyperpigmentation is a type of skin discoloration that results from too much sun exposure – melanin is your body’s natural sunscreen, so over-exposure to the sun causes DNA damage, which may cause pigment production to increase.

Hormonal hyperpigmentation is associated with hormonal changes, including those experienced by pregnant women (melasma or chloasma) and women on birth control.

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation is a typical side effect of any type of inflammation, including acne.

The best way to treat pigmentation

Rumaé Dermal Pharma Institute has committed itself to understanding the physiological processes behind how pigment is made – with products that prevent or stop the steps in pigmentation production, even before the DNA is activated to stimulate melanin production. Luminaé is a line of skin lighteners that are used in conjunction with procedures intended to enhance the efficacy of previous treatments.
